The Yas Marina Hotel, designed by the architectural design firm Asymptote of New York, was built in record time of only 18 months and is a first-class, futuristic hotel complex. This building, measuring 217 m in length, 44 m in width and 35 m in height, was designed so that sandstorms, earthquakes, and temperature variances of up to 50°C would not have an impact on the integrity of the building. What is so special about the architecture of this building is the so-called “Gridshell”. Constructed of steel, this extremely modern installation is reminiscent of a giant, scaly veil. It surrounds the two elliptical building sections, which stand on either side of the racecourse. The gigantic shell consists of a dome-like unit constructed of steel and includes almost 6,000 hexagonal glass panels. Hollow steel profile RHS was utilized in the construction of this, which has been shown to be especially effective when used for transparent roofs due to its slim profile dimensions with good structural values. Alukönigstahl delivered approximately 1,000 tons of hollow steel profile RHS and approximately 700 tons of RHS-round tubes in compliance with EN 10210 / S355J2H. This tonnage was necessary to support the almost 17,000 m² of 10 V-shaped main supports and 100 horizontal elements.
